Choosing The Right Foam Roller

24 Jul 2017

Foam Rollers are a common tool used by active people to help with recovery and warming up pre-exercise. But with so many different shapes and sizes, how do you choose the right one for you?

Hardness

The biggest factor in finding the right foam roller depends on the type of massage you are looking for. Different rollers provide different levels of hardness. A harder roller, like the Pro 45, will provide a more intense massage ideal for myofascial release. A softer roller like the Foam Roller, has a softer outer surface great for those looking for a more gentle and comfortable massage. Harder rollers will also keep their shape for longer - our Onyx Body Roller has a PVC hollow pipe which aids in shape retention.

Size

Once you have determined the type of massage you want, you then have to decide on the length of roller. The ideal length of roller depends on its use. A longer roller can be used for almost any exercise, whereas a smaller roller may restrict you to one leg. The added benefit of a smaller roller is the ease with which it can be stored and transported. Our Pro 45 and Foam Roller ranges offer multiple sizes. Half Round Rollers provide a more stable base than the full round rollers and are ideal for static stretching or balance exercises.

Surface

The surface of some rollers is also a factor. The dimples on some rollers, like Myotherapy Rollers, can provide a more hands on feel and have an effect similar to a spiky trigger point ball, penetrating the muscle tissue deeper and providing greater relief.

Density

The density of a roller refers to the quality of the foam being used and its ability to retain hardness and shape. A lower density roller will have a much shorter usage life because over time the foam will lose its shape and hardness. All HART Foam Rollers are made from a high density EVA foam and retain their shape well after prolonged use. Included in each products description is a density and hardness scale so that you can see the properties of each roller.
